The video tells the story of a young newlywed woman’s relationship with her husband and her encounter with his homeland, Denmark, where she has moved. The video takes the form of a personal letter to the narrator’s mother, in which a voice-over describes the young woman’s mixed feelings and difficult experience of becoming part of a new culture.
Visually, the camera is fixed on a surface where two hands display family photographs from the narrator’s childhood and present life. As the story unfolds, people and details are cut out of the photographs, while other photographs are added, allowing past and present to gradually merge.
The work portrays the woman’s dreams for the future as well as her feeling of alienation, as she experiences how the norms and values she once knew are gradually being replaced by new ones in an unfamiliar country.
